We are starting a new tradition here at Blu where we're setting a 30-Day challenge for the team. A goal that is positive, environmentally conscious, motivational and we hope to inspire the community (yes YOU!) to join us on this journey to make the world a better place.

Our first challenge for this month of September is to REUSE.

Turn down the plastic shopping bags, keep a coffee mug at work and always carry a reusable water bottle. That means ONLY use reusable items; when you shop, buy your coffee and no disposable bottles. If you must purchase a bottled beverage (like Coconut water, etc.) opt for glass bottle vs plastic.

* Facts on glass:  90 percent of recycled glass is used to make new containers. Glass can even be used by glass makers and artists due to their aesthetic quality. Uses for recycled glass include kitchen tiles, counter tops, and wall insulation. Mixed glass cal be recycled into aggregate, which is a construction material used for roads and concrete.

Every metric ton of waste glass recycled into new items saves 315 additional kilograms of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere! Recycling seems to be the better option especially since a modern glass bottle would take 4000 years or more to decompose -- and even longer if it's in the landfill [Recycling Revolution]. Also, if recycled, glass containers go from recycling bin to store shelf in as little as 30 days.

* Facts on plastic: Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour in which most are thrown away and not recycled!

That is our challenge, to REUSE, sounds easy? We have set up a jar in the middle of our office for a dollar anytime we spot a plastic bag, coffee cup or plastic bottle at someones desk. This is the one time we hope the money jar won't fill up.
