IS VANCOUVER'S CEILING HEIGHT ABOUT TO INCREASE?

Is Vancouver going taller?

The city of Vancouver is currently considering raising the ceiling height for downtown towers as long as they are not within several protected view corridors.

If approved, the proposal could allow a 500-foot (46-storey) tower to go in at the Burrard Gateway project proposed for the south end of the Burrard Street Bridge, and a 700-foot (65-storey) tower at Burrard and Georgia. (By comparison, the city’s tallest building, the Shangri-La, is 659 feet.) Two 450-foot towers could also flank the south end of the Granville Street Bridge, up from the current height restriction of 225 feet.

There are also proposals for a 29 story tower at main and Broadway and the Marine Gateway project at the end of Cambie Street calls for a series of 30+ story buildings.

What are your thoughts? Should the city go higher? Is density the answer to our population expansion?  Should it be restricted to the downtown core or should all areas of the city considering going higher?

The Vancouver Views implementation report goes before the Standing Committee on Planning and Environment on Jan. 20, at 2pm, in council chambers.
