THE WALDORF GETS A NEW LIFE

An Eastside institution, The Waldorf Hotel, is getting another life as a hipster hangout and hub for artists and creative types.

The Globe and Mail took notice and reviewed the hotel in today's travel section, calling the hotel a 'landmark destination for creative travellers.'

The infamous Tiki bar remains visually intact with its awesome retro Polynesian theme, and plays host to DJs spinning on a vintage sound system.

Built in 1947, the hotel's heyday really began with its 1955 transformation into one of the world's most famous 'Tiki' themed hotels.  However, just as the Eastside fell on hard times, so did the hotel.

It last enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in the mid-90s, but the recently completed renovations are something completely different.  The multi-room venue aims to become a hub where 'comtemporary art, music and food and culture convene under one roof.'

In addition to the Tiki Bar, the hotel boasts a restaurant, Cafe Nuba, a hair salon (Barbarella), a nightclub, live music venue and a gift shop.  Oh, and the hotel rooms - 30 rooms, starting at $110/night with free wifi (nice touch).  It's a short, and colourful walk to Gastown too.
