LOOKIN' GOOD FOR 125

125

On Wednesday, April 6 our fair city celebrates its 125th birthday (I don't think she looks a day over 112). Help celebrate another milestone for Vancouver by checking out one of these great events...

The city's official party is 'Birthday LIVE' in Jack Poole Plaza at Canada Place. This free party is highlighted by the re-lighting of the Olympic Cauldron. It kicks off with a street hockey tournament at 2:00 pm and the cauldron will be lit during the official ceremonies between 6:00 - 7:00 pm.

At 8:20, Berlin based visual artist, Phillipp Geist will flood the plaza with light and video with his Time Drifts art installation which has been customized to celebrate Vancouver's b-day.

The party's musical portion hits its climax with Vancouver rock institution, 54-40, at 8:45 pm. The iconic band is also celebrating their 30th anniversary. The full schedule for Birthday LIVE is HERE.

If you're not down for the official party, make the trip out to Empire Field and sing along with the Southsiders as they cheer on the Vancouver Whitecaps as the team faces the New England Revolution at 7:00 pm.

To celebrate the city's birthday the 'Caps are selling 125 tickets for $12.50 for the team's 3rd ever MLS home game. Details are HERE.

Maybe you want to avoid the crowds and reflect on what the city means to you. In that case, don't forget to vote for the 'Places That Matter to Vancouver" via the Vancouver Heritage Foundation's website. Voting closes Wednesday, April 6 at midnight.

Finally, here's a blast from the past in video from the City of Vancouver website...

"In this early 1900 street film, Seattle movie-maker, William Harbeck, mounted a camera on the front of a B.C. Electric Railway tram and filmed the journey along Granville and Hastings, along Westminster Avenue (now Main Street), Carrall, Powell, Cordova, Cambie, Robson and Davie . . . a fascinating look at a Vancouver of a century ago set to very quirky music!"
